| Lot description: Ancients Antioch. Caligula (AD 37-41), with Agrippina Senior. AR tetradrachm (26mm, 15.19 gm, 12h). Dated year 3 = AD 38/9. Good Extremely Fine. Ex Gemini IX (9 January 2012), lot 262.Despite being perhaps the worst of all Roman emperors, Caligula's Roman Provincial coinage is interesting and attractive. As he had few, if any, real accomplishments to tout, his reverse types place great stress on his blue-blooded lineage. His detailed portrait on this rare tetradrachm of Antioch seems to hint at his cruel, capricious nature; the reverse depicts his mother, the firebrand Agrippina the Elder, wife of Germanicus, whose agitation against the regime of Tiberius earned her exile and death. One of Caligula's early acts was to travel to the tiny island of Panditeria, where Agrippina had starved to death during her exile, and return to Rome with her ashes to be interred in the Augustan mausoleum.
